Research Notes on Depression Linked to Thinning of Brain

Researchers have recently discovered that those with a family history of depression have a thinner right hemisphere of the brain. In a study of 131 individuals aged 6 to 54, researchers found that those with a family history of depression had a 28% thinning of the right cortex, the outermost surface of the brain. Thinning of this degree is also associated with Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia.1

Fast Facts:

  • Poor cognitive problems associated with depression may be related to the thinning of the brain, such as poor attention and memory skills.2
  • While the thinning of the right side of the brain may show a family history of depression, researchers feel that if the left side of the brain begins to thin as well, an individual is much more likely to develop the illness.2
  • Researchers believe that physicians may be able to intervene in patients with a decreased brain thickness to avoid depressive conditions.2
