Research Notes on Depression Linked to Heart Disease

While many patients who suffer a heart attack also suffer depression afterward, researchers now believe that depression may actually worsen the outcome and can, in fact, lead to heart disease. Researchers say that patients who suffer from both heart disease and depression are more likely to have heart failure. Unfortunately, the use of antidepressants does not seem to affect the outcome.1

Fast Facts:

  • New study results show a two-fold increase in the risk for heart failure when a patient suffers from heart disease and depression.2
  • Researchers noted that there are common risk factors for both depression and heart failure, and it is perhaps a failure to change physical behaviors that results in the incidence.2
  • Researchers suggest a thorough screening for depression among coronary artery disease patients.2
