Research Notes on Depression Hotlines
Depression hotlines offer access to trained professionals who are able to discuss a range of topics.1 Most are open 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. In addition to offering a sympathetic ear, they can refer callers to other organizations for various resources. If you or a loved one is having thoughts of suicide, a hotline specialist can provide understanding without judgment.1 Some hotlines specialize in depression, suicide, or all types of crisis.2

- Some hotlines provide help from survivors of suicide.3
- Counselors are trained to discuss anxiety, alcoholism, and substance abuse as well.1
- 1-800-SUICIDE is the number for the National Suicide Hotline.2
- Some depression hotlines have email addresses set up for those suffering from depression who wish to reach out through email.1
