Research Notes on Depression Genetics
Studies have shown that depression can be inherited. Some research indicates that genetics accounts for 40% of the risk and the other 60% is environmental.1In identical twin studies if one of the twins develop depression the other develops it approximately 76% of the time. While fraternal twin studies show if one twin develops depression the other will also develop it about 19% of the time.2
Fast Facts:
- Researchers have found that the most likely gene is in the region of chromosome 15.3
- Bipolar disorder is more likely to develop if one of the parents suffer a history of clinical depression.2
- These studies could be useful in advances in the treatment of early-onset depression.4
