Research Notes on Depression Causes
There is no simple explanation why people experience depression. The causes of depression differ from person to person. Some people may become depressed as the result of environmental changes that they have little control over such as the loss of a loved one or financial problems.1 A hormonal imbalance could also be to blame.1 It is believed that depression is the result of more than one factor.2
Fast Facts:
- Depression an develop as the result of a physical illness, a surgery, or a reaction to a medication.3
- An imbalance of neurotransmitters may also cause depression.3
- Researchers believe that genetic factors may make a person more susceptible to manic depressive, or bipolar disorder.3
