Research Notes on Depression
Depression, officially called depressive disorder, is more than the normal "blues" or "down in the dumps" that everyone feels from time to time.1 Clinical depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, and is very treatable.2 If a person's sadness does not pass with time or help from friends and family, a doctor or therapist should be seen.3 With treatment, more than 80% of those suffering from depression will show improvement.2 Without treatment, depression causes people to stop taking pleasure in things they once enjoyed. It can damage personal relationships, affect school or work performance, complicate other medical conditions, and can even be serious enough to lead to suicide.2
