Research Notes on Depo-Provera
Depo-Provera is a contraceptive that is injected into the upper arm or buttocks. One injection of Depo-Provera is effective for three months. This medication may cause changes in your menstrual cycle. Your periods may become irregular, or they may completely stop. Menstruation will return to normal after you stop receiving the shots, but this may take several months. Since Depo-Provera contains high levels of progestin to prevent pregnancy, women do not experience the side effects of exposure to estrogen.1

- Possible side effects of Depo-Provera include, but are not limited to headaches, depression, dizziness, acne, and weight gain.2
- Depo-Provera does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.2
- Depo-Provera is not recommended for women with a history of having breast cancer, blood clots, or liver disease.3
