Research Notes on Demerol Withdrawal
When patients have used Demerol (meperidine) for a significant length of time, the medication must be slowly discontinued in order to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms of Demerol withdrawal can vary between mild to severe depending on the length of time the patient has used the medication and the dosage being taken. Excessive sweating, muscle spasms, tremors, and chills are a few of the symptoms a patient may exhibit when experiencing withdrawal from Demerol.1
Fast Facts:
- Withdrawal symptoms can begin within hours of taking the last dose and last for days or weeks.2
- Other possible Demerol withdrawal symptoms include: anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, depression, flu-like symptoms, hallucinations, diarrhea, vomiting, bone and muscle pain, and extreme irritability.2
- Treatment options for Demerol withdrawal vary, though some rehabilitation institutions offer patients the opportunity to remain sedated so they are not aware of the physical withdrawal symptoms.2
