Our Guides and Physician Review team have organized the Top 10 Health Resources on Delirium and compiled helpful research notes below.
Delirium is a mental disorder characterized by disorientation, a change in the level of consciousness and being unable to think clearly.1 People who suffer from delirium often experience restlessness, agitation, and combativeness.2 Although the exact cause of delirium is unknown, researchers think a combination of stresses and changes can trigger delirium.3 Medications such as antihistamines and H-2 blockers have also been identified as possible triggers.3 Dementia and delirium are often found in the same cases.
Fast Facts:
- Often appears in approximately one-third of hospitalized people over age 65.2
- Alcohol withdrawl and sleep deprivation may also cause delirium.3
- Medications may be prescribed for people who are very agitated.2
