Research Notes on Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) in a deep vein, most often in the legs. A blood clot in a deep vein can break off as an embolus and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs, causing a potentially fatal condition (pulmonary embolism). Signs of deep venous thrombosis include swelling of an arm or leg with or without pain or discoloration.

  • Hospitalized patients are at particular risk and typically receive DVT prophylaxis with heparin.
  • DVTs are diagnosed by duplex ultrasonography, CT scan, or MRI.
  • DVTs are treated with heparin for the first few days and transitioned to warfarin for long-term therapy.
  • Depending on the underlying cause for the DVT, the duration of warfarin therapy is typically 6 months or life-long.
