Decompression Sickness

Research Notes on Decompression Sickness

Decompression illness is a condition that results from a decrease in the ambient pressure surrounding a body. This is most often seen in a diver when surfacing after a dive. DCI emcompasses two different diseases, decompression sickness (DCS) and arterial gas embolism (AGE). DCS is thought to be the result of bubbles growing in tissue; causing local damage. AGE is a result of bubbles that enter the lung and travel through the arteries. This causes tissue damage at a distance by blocking blood flow at the small vessel level.
