Research Notes on Decathlon
A decathlon is the ultimate athletic competition. It is a two day track and field event testing speed, strength, agility and endurance.1 The competition lasts two days and consists of 10 different events.2 Points are awarded to the competitors after each event, and the total score after all 10 events determines the winner.3
Fast Facts:
- Day 1 events: 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meters.2
- Day 2 events: 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1500 meters.2
- The decathlon was developed based on ancient Greece's Pentathlon, which consisted of 5 events.1
- A decathlon is a male competition. Females compete in the heptathlon, which consists of 7 events.1
- The first decathlon was held in the 1912 Olympic Games.3
