Inflammation of a digit (finger or toe) is called dactylitis in medical terminology.1 Fingers or toes that are affected by dactylitis swell up into a sausage shape and become painful.1 Common diseases that can result in dactylitis include sickle cell disease, tuberculosis, syphilis, and psoriatic arthritis.1
Fast Facts:
- Infants with sickle cell disease may first begin having symptoms of dactylitis around six to nine months of age.2
- Signs and symptoms of dactylitis include painful swelling of the hands and feet, a warm feeling to the swollen areas, fever, mild anemia, and a raised white blood cell count.1
- Treatment for dactylitis is typically limited to treating its cause.1
