Research Notes on Cystoscopy
A Cystoscopy is a procedure done by using a cystoscope that enables doctors to examine the bladder and the urethra. The test is performed to diagnose and evaluate urinary tract disorders, cancer of the bladder or urethra, and enlarged prostate in men. The procedure can be done in a doctors office, although it is usually performed in a hospital as an outpatient surgery and usually takes between 5 and 20 minutes.
Fast Facts:
- Areas that can be examined include: the urethra or urinary channel, bladder and the 2 ureters
- A variety of different anesthetics can be used to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
- You may feel a slight discomfort when the cystoscope is passed through the urethra into the bladder.
- During a cystoscopy, the urologist may remove bladder stones or kidney stones , gather tissue samples, and perform x-ray studies.
