Research Notes on Cyanobacteria
Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, blue-green bacteria or Cyanophyta, is a phylum of bacteria that obtain their energy through photosynthesis. They are a significant component of the marine nitrogen cycle and an important primary producer in many areas of the ocean, but are also found on land. Some cyanobacteria are sold as food, notably Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina). It has been suggested that they could be a much more substantial part of human food supplies, as a kind of "superfood." ...read more on Wikipedia

- Largest and most important groups of bacteria on earth.1
- Cyanobacteria can fix nitrogen, survive in very hostile environments down to -60°C, have circadian rhythms and can differentiate into heterocysts.2
- The green coloration of cyanobacteria comes from chlorophyll while the blue comes from phycocyanin.3
- At least one secondary metabolite, cyanovirin, has possesses anti-HIV properties.4
