Research Notes on Curly Hair-Ankyloblepharon-Nail Dysplasia Syndrome
Curly hair-ankyloblepharon-nail dysplasia syndrome (CHANDS) is an extremely rare genetic disorder.1 The syndrome affects the outer layer (ectoderm) of a developing fetus. 1 As a result, eyes, skin, nails, and hair may be underdeveloped or malformed.1 Also referred to as Baughman syndrome, less than five cases are reported to exist.1
Fast Facts:
- An individual must inherit the defective gene from each parent in order to have the disorder.2
- The cause of the genetic mutation is unknown but is more prevalent in individuals whose parents share a blood line.2
- Eyelid adhesions, thick and grooved fingernails and toenails, and incoordination are common clinical signs of the syndrome.3
