Cryptococcosis is infection which is caused by the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans. It was virtually an unknown infection before the occurance of the AIDS epidemic. It often affects AIDs patients, and occasionally people with Hodgkin's disease or sarcoidosis and those who are on long-term corticosteroid treatment. It is life threatening, and often fatal, as it affects the meninges, or tissues covering the brain and spinal cord which results in meningitis.
