Crohn's disease is a type of irritable bowel disease that can occur anywhere in the digestive tract between mouth and anus.1 Although the causes are not known, the results of Crohn's disease are inflammation in all layers of the intestine (or other digestive organ) which causes diarrhea.1 The disease can lead to a thickening of the intestinal wall which may lead to a blockage.1
Fast Facts:
- Frequently occurs in the lower part of the small intestine.1
- Fistulas are common problems and can lead to further complications when they become infected.2
- Crohn's disease is chronic, meaning it is a continual medical issue. Although some individuals may experience long periods where the disease is in remission, it is never truly gone.3
