Research Notes on Crohn's Disease Research
Because researchers have been unable to find a cure for Crohn's disease, studies continue on a daily basis. The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) is a group dedicated to researching and providing information about the disease, and they have contributed over $127 million towards research since their inception.1 There are two main research categories: basic research (explores the scientific foundations of the disease) and clinical research (determines which medical and surgical options work best for patients).
Fast Facts:
- The Mayo Clinic is the coordinating center for the CCRA's clinical testing.2
- Currently, researchers are evaluating the long-term use of antibiotics as a treatment for Crohn's disease.3
- Other medications currently being studied include Interleukin-10, budesonide, methotrexate and cyclosporine.3
