Research Notes on Crohn's Disease Diagnosis
Crohn's disease is a condition in which there is chronic inflammation in the digestive tract, usually in the intestines. Diagnosing the disease can be particularly difficult as there is no single test that can give a definitive answer.1 Because the symptoms associated with Crohn's mimic other disorders, physicians must often rely on various tests and making a diagnosis through a process of elimination.2
Fast Facts:
- After a thorough physical examination and a history of symptoms are listed, many physicians order blood tests such as a complete blood count and a liver function test in addition to stool studies.3
- Various endoscopic exams may be ordered, such as sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, endoscopic ultrasound and capsule endoscopy.3
- Radiological testing may include X-rays with or without contrast and a CT scan.3
