Research Notes on Crohn's Disease Causes
Although researchers are unsure exactly what causes Crohn's disease, it is believed that heredity and the immune system are often to blame. Researchers once thought that diet may play a role in the development of the disease, but have since determined that while diet may trigger a Crohn's flare up, it is not the actual cause of the disease. A weakened immune system and the fact that the disease typically appears in families has researchers concentrating on these two areas.1
Fast Facts:
- Some researchers believe that environmental factors such as cigarette smoke may trigger the development of Crohn's.2
- Some scientists believe that bacterial infections may be partially responsible for the development of the disease.3
- Researchers recently discovered that a gene (NOD2) may be associated with the development of Crohn's disease.3
