Research Notes on Crohn's Pain Relief


Crohn's disease is a medical condition in which there is chronic inflammation in the digestive tract. Pain is common in afflicted individuals due to medication side effects, muscle strain, swelling caused by inflammation and even obstruction of the intestines.1 Various methods can be used to reduce this pain, such as: medications, heating pads/ice packs, aromatherapy, diet, yoga and massage.1

  • A recent study shows that quitting smoking can have a profound impact on the number of flare-ups and the pain experienced by those with Crohn's Disease.2
  • Codeine and Vicodin can ease pain, but they also slow down the bowels and can be addictive. Patients should avoid all NSAIDs pain relievers.1
  • Between 15 to 30 minutes of progressive muscle relaxation may help to relieve muscle pain and spasms.1
  • Yoga and Thai Chi are both gentle exercises which won't overwork the body but may provide some pain relief.1
