Research Notes on Crohn's Disease and Skin Rash


Skin rash is the second most common complication of inflammatory bowel disorders such as Crohn's disease. About 5% of all people IBD, and 40% of Crohn's patients will suffer from some type of skin condition alongside their gastrointestinal issues. The most common skin rashes associated with Crohn's disease are erythema nodosum and pyoderma gangrenosum.1

  • Erythema nodosum, a rash that is characterized by raised, tender red bumps under the skin, occurs in about 15% of Crohn's patients.2
  • Pyoderma gangrenosum lesions often occur after trauma to the skin, and is only seen in about 2% of Crohn's patients.2
  • Skin conditions are typically resolved when the Crohn's flare-up subsides, but in some cases topical steroids are needed.2
