Research Notes on Crohn's Disease and Raw Milk
Crohn's disease is a condition in which there is chronic inflammation in the digestive tract. This inflammation can lead to scar tissue and pain, and eventually, a blockage of the intestine. Although there are no definitive answers regarding what causes Crohn's disease, some researchers feel that contaminants from foods may play a role in the development of the disease.1 In fact, some believe that pathogens in pasteurized milk may be to blame.1 Others, however, feel that raw milk would only make the inflammation worse.2
Fast Facts:
- Raw milk is milk that is not pasteurized or homogenized, is full-fat, contains no additives and comes from Jersey and Guernsey cows that graze on open fields.3
- Supporters of raw milk say it contains friendly bacteria that are necessary for a healthy colon.1
- In most states, the sale of non-pasteurized milk is prohibited.
