Research Notes on Crohn's Disease and Disability
Crohn's disease is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation in the digestive tract. In order to apply for disability benefits due to Crohn's disease, you will need to provide evidence of the severity of the disease and that you have had, or are expected to have, these severe symptoms for at least 12 months.1 You must also show proof that you are following the therapy prescribed by your doctor.1 If these conditions are not met, your claim will be denied.1
Fast Facts:
- A person may be found disabled if he or she has: persistent or recurrent intestinal obstruction, arthritis, iritis, fever, or liver dysfunction not attributable to other causes, intermittent obstruction due to intractable abscesses or fistula formation, and be underweight according to a governmental chart.1
- Additionally, a person may be found disabled if they have a hematocrit level of 30% or less, fat in the stool of 7gm or greater in a 24 hour period, or nitrogen in the stool of greater than 3 gm.1
- Children under the age of 18 may also receive disability benefits; however, the requirements may be slightly different.1
