Research Notes on Crohn's Disease Risk Factors
Risk factors for the development of Crohn's disease include: age, ethnicity, family history, location, smoking, and isotretinoin (Accutane) use. Crohn's disease can appear at any age, but it is more commonly diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 30. Although researchers are currently unsure why, those of European or Jewish ancestry are four to five times as likely to develop Crohn's disease than the general population.1
Fast Facts:
- Research has shown that smoking not only increases the risk of Crohn's disease, but also is linked to an earlier onset of the condition.2
- Those with a family member suffering from Crohn's have a 30 times greater risk of developing the disease than those without a familial connection.1
- Some researchers believe that being left-handed or having an appendectomy as an adult are also risk factors for the development of Crohn's.2
