Research Notes on Crohn's Disease Medications
In the treatment of Crohn's disease, physicians may recommend a variety of medications to treat inflammation in the intestines and help control other symptoms. Anti-inflammatory drugs, immune system suppressors, and antibiotics are commonly prescribed medications for Crohn's patients. Some patients will also require the use of pain medications, laxatives, anti-diarrheal medications, nutritional supplements, and iron supplements.1
Fast Facts:
- Anti-inflammatory medications can include sulfasalazine, mesalamine, and various corticosteroids.2
- Immune system suppressants can help keep Crohn's in remission. Drugs in this class include: azathioprine, infliximab, and mercaptopurine.2
- Ciprofloxacin and metronidazole are commonly prescribed antibiotics that may be needed to treat complications of Crohn's disease such as fistulas.2
