Research Notes on Criteria for Taking Statins

Like other drugs, there are certain criteria for taking statin drugs. Doctors first try treating high cholesterol with exercise and a diet low in trans fat and saturated fats.1 If diet and exercise do not work, statins may be prescribed. First doctors must look at other criteria first. Your family history of cardiovascular disease and cholesterol is first examined.2 You will also be asked if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or peripheral vascular disease.2 Other criteria brought into question are your lifestyle habits, weight, age, if you smoke, and your overall general health.2 If your only risk factor is high cholesterol, a doctor may not prescribe statin drugs for you.

Fast Facts:

  • Researchers believe that C-reactive protein levels should also be criteria for taking statins, which may help save many more lives.3
  • In a recent study it was found that 44.9% of patients that meet the criteria for statins are not on statins.4
  • Even if you are taking cholesterol lowering drugs, lifestyle changes are still important.
