Research Notes on Crepitus
Crepitus is a sound of a cracking or popping nature that can occur under the skin, in the joints, or around the lungs.1 Crepitus is often loud enough to be heard by the human ear without a stethoscope.1 Crepitus often happens when the cartilage around the joints becomes worn.2 Some known causes of crepitus include gout, rheumatoid arthritis, fractures, and bone tumors.3
Fast Facts:
- The word crepitus is derived from the Latin word crepitus, meaning "a rattle or crackling sound."2
- Crepitus is also a painful symptom of a tendon injury called tendinopathy, the tear and/or inflammation of a tendon.4
- Subcutaneous emphysema is a condition where the soft tissue beneath the skin accumulates a lot of air or gas and causes a cracking or popping sound; that is also known as crepitus.1
