Research Notes on Cranial Remolding Orthosis
Positional plagiocephaly, also known as deformational plagiocephaly, is a condition found in infants. It is characterized by a flat spot on the back, or one side of the head. It is caused by remaining in one position for too long.1 This condition may be successfully treated by the wearing of a helmet.2 The STARband is the favorite design.3 The helmet has a dramatic impact on the shape of the infant's skull.4
Fast Facts:
- Intentional deformation of the skull of infants has been practiced for thousands of years, and is still in practice in some parts of the world.5
- An orthosis is a splint or a brace used to shape something, in the case of cranial remolding the orthosis is a helmet.6
- Support from other parents is always helpful. Seek it out.7
