Research Notes on Coxsackie Virus

The Coxsackie virus is a virus that often mimics mild or nonparalytic polio.1 The Coxsackie viruses cause a variety of infections, including epidemic pleurodynia (Bornholm disease), and are subdivided into groups A and B based on their pathology.1 The most well known Coxsackie virus is hand, foot, and mouth disease (unrelated to foot and mouth disease), a common childhood illness which affects mostly children aged 10 or under.1

  • The Coxsackie viruses were discovered in 1948-49 by Gilbert Dalldorf.1
  • In most cases infection is asymptomatic or causes only mild symptoms.1
  • Infection can also produce short-lived fever and painful blisters in the mouth, on the palms and fingers of the hand, or on the soles of the feet.1
  • Adults can also be affected by the Coxsackie virus.1
