Research Notes on Coughing Up Mucus with Blood in It
Coughing up blood (also known as hemoptysis), although alarming, is not always indicative of a serious illness.1 Blood-tinged mucus is commonly a result of a rupture in a small blood vessel due to the force of coughing or a bronchial infection.1 However, there are other, more serious issues which can result in bloody mucus being expelled from the body, such as: a blood clot in the lung, cystic fibrosis, Goodpasture's syndrome, and pneumonia.2
Fast Facts:
- Some diagnostic tests can cause you to cough up blood, such as a bronchoscopy, laryngoscopy, lung biopsy, or spirometry.2
- If you begin coughing up blood and also suffer from other symptoms such as dizziness, feeling faint, or a severe shortness of breath, seek emergency medical attention.2
- If you notice blood after coughing, alert your physician to the matter. You may need to be seen in the office, or it may be determined that it is a result of a known condition.2
