Research Notes on Costs of Psychotherapy
The cost of psychotherapy varies considerably from one therapist to another. The cost can exceed well over $100 per session if the client is seeing a highly educated and experienced therapist such as a psychiatrist.1 However, if you are covered by health insurance, most of this cost will be paid for by your health insurance provider.2
Fast Facts:
- Local community based mental health centers offer low-cost therapy based on your ability to pay.1
- Some psychotherapists may also offer a sliding fee based on your income.1
- Your insurance provider may have a co-pay which you will have to pay for out-of-pocket, this could be as much as $30,00.1
- Insurance providers may also limit the amount of sessions that they pay for.1
