Cosmetics Containing Phthalates

Research Notes on Cosmetics Containing Phthalates

Phthalates are a group of chemicals used as softeners, or plasticizers, in polyvinyl chloride (PVC, vinyl) products, such as children’s toys, decorating and building products, and in particular cosmetics and beauty products like nail polish, lipstick and perfumes. In a random sample of 1,029 people from the U.S., a 1999 FDA study of toxins showed that every one of them tested positive for phthalates in their blood or urine. The highest incidence were from women of childbearing age. In animal tests, phthalates have been shown to damage the lungs, liver and kidneys, and to harm the developing testes of offspring. The F.D.A. states that it's not clear what effect, if any, phthalates have on health. In 2002, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) reaffirmed its original 1985 conclusion that the phthalates used in cosmetics: DBP, DMP, and DEP are safe as used in cosmetic products.
