Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a risk factor for coronary artery disease. Excessive pressure inside the heart to pump blood increases the heart's workload which can cause the muscle to thicken and become stiff. Hypertension also increases the risk of stroke, congestive heart failure, heart attack, and kidney failure.1
