Research Notes on Congestive Heart Failure Symptoms

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is when the heart weakens and is unable to sufficiently pump enough blood for the rest of the body. Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, cough, feeling unable to get a deep breath and swelling of the ankles, legs or abdomen. Someone with CHF may be unable to sleep unless they are sitting up.1

Fast Facts:

  • CHF usually does not cause chest pain.1
  • Is a syndrome, not a disease.2
  • Diabetes, smoking, alcohol abuse and being overweight increase the risk of developing CHF.2
