Research Notes on Congestive Heart Failure

Congestive heart failure (CHF) typically develops slowly over time. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is unable to sufficiently pump an adequate amount of blood through the body. With CHF, fluid collects in the lungs and other body tissues.1

Fast Facts:

  • Treatment of CHF may include a combination of medications, dietary changes, and modified daily activities. In severe cases, a pacemaker, internal cardiac defibrillator, or heart transplant may be recommended.2
  • CHF is more common with advancing age.3
  • In the United States, about 550,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.3
