Congenital Moles

GuideWisdom™

This WisdomCard managed by: Tara Salamone

A congenital mole is a cluster of pigmented skin cells in the epidermis and dermis present at birth. The spot is either flat or raised, and may range in color from pink, tan, brown, or black. Moles can appear anywhere in the body. About one in one hundred babies are born with these. A child with congenital moles has an increased risk of malignant melanoma. Fortunately, melanoma remains an uncommon malignancy in pre-pubertal children. It is best to have all congenital moles be examined by a health care professional.
