Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

GuideWisdom™

This WisdomCard managed by: Chris Miller

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or CAH, is a group of genetic conditions that affect the adrenal glands. Those with this condition do no produce enough of the hormones cortisol and aldosterone, and produce too much of androgen. There are two forms of CAH; the classic form occurs while the baby is still developing in the womb, and the symptoms are present at birth. The non-classical form or "late-onset" CAH presents later on in infancy, or it even into adulthood. It affects both males and females. It can interfere with normal growth and development in children, including the normal development of the genitals.
