Research Notes on Concerta Withdrawal
Concerta, a drug prescribed for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, may possibly incur withdrawal symptoms in those that abruptly stop taking it.1 This usually occurs when a patient is taking higher doses of Concerta than what is prescribed by a doctor.1 Close monitoring is required to ensure a person doesn't develop depression when withdrawing from Concerta, especially when the drug has been abused.2 If a person feels like Concerta is not working or the dosage isn't strong enough, do not self-diagnose or automatically increase the medicine, and tell a doctor immediately.3
Fast Facts:
- Concerta is the brand name for the drug methylphenidate.4
- Common side effects of Concerta include vomiting, blurred vision, loss of appetite, and dry mouth.5
- If a patient has taken an MAOI within 14 days of being prescribed Concerta, tell a doctor right away as taking Concerta before the MAOI has exited the system can cause severe side effects.6
