Research Notes on Common Warts
Common warts are rough, gray-brown, dome-shaped skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).1 Common warts are often called seed warts, due to blood vessels producing a black dot that looks like a seed.2 They are mostly located at the back of the hands, fingers, around the nails, and at the back of the knees.2 Warts are slightly contagious, noncancerous, painless, and usually disappear on their own.1
Fast Facts:
- Treatment can help prevent transmission to other parts of the body or to other people; however, common warts can recur after treatment, and can be a persistent skin problem.1
- Although not highly contagious, warts are usually acquired through person-to-person contact.3
- Not everyone exposed to HPV will develop warts.4
- Warts are the second most common skin complaint after acne.4
