Research Notes on Common Cold Symptoms
A burning sensation in the nose, sneezing, and a runny nose are the first symptoms of a cold.1 Mucus gradually becomes thicker as the cold progresses.1 A mild cough may develop, but fever is unlikely in the common cold.1
Fast Facts:
- You may develop a sore throat or headache, feel fatigued, and become hoarse after a few days with a cold.2
- Cold symptoms typically last about seven days.3
- If the cold is caused by a virus, other symptoms such as postnasal drip and decreased appetite may be present.3
