Research Notes on Colon Cancer
Colon cancer is the third most common form of cancer. It is also the second leading cause of death worldwide per year. Most are thought to come from adenomatous polyps in the colon. Current screening guidelines recommend colonoscopy beginning at age 50 for those with no known risk factors. Those with a family history or known genetic predisposition to colon cancer should begin screening at age 40 or earlier, depending upon the underlying condition.
Fast Facts
- Largely preventable through appropriate and timely cancer screening.
- Increased risk associated with multiple SNPs, including rs6983267, rs2273535, and rs7903146.
- Two genetic conditions - familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) - predispose an individual to colon cancer.
