Research Notes on Colon Cancer Risk Factors
There are several risk factors that may increase a person's chances of developing colon cancer. There are risk factors that you cannot change, and risk factors related to lifestyle. Age is a large risk factor; the chances of developing colon cancer significantly increases in those over the age of 50.1
Fast Facts:
- If you've had colon polyps in the past, your risk of colon cancer rises.2
- Genetic syndromes (familial adenomatous polyposis and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer) may increase a person's risk of this cancer.2
- Smoking, heavy alcohol use, and a sedentary lifestyle also pose a risk of colon cancer.2
