Research Notes on Colles Fracture


Colles fracture is defined as a fracture of the distal radius bone (wrist). It specifically refers to a fracture through the distal metaphysis no further than four centimeters proximal to the distal articular surface of the radius. Colles fracture was named after an Irish surgeon, Abraham Colles (1773-1843), who first described it in 1814.1

  • Common in people with osteoporosis.1
  • Can be caused by falling backwards onto extended hands trying to break the fall.1
