Research Notes on Colitis Treatments
Ulcerative colitis is a condition in which the body's immune system targets the lining of the colon, resulting in inflammation, ulcers, bleeding, and diarrhea.1 The first steps in treating ulcerative colitis are often lifestyle changes and medication.2 If these steps do not effectively control your condition, your physician may recommend surgery.2 Surgical procedures are generally grouped into two types: those which allow a patient to control stool, and those which require the surgeon to create an opening for the stool to exit.1
Fast Facts:
- Mesalamine, prednisone, or infliximab may be prescribed to treat ulcerative colitis.3
- Surgery may also be an option when side effects of medication significantly interfere with daily living.1
- Lifestyle changes, such as avoiding spicy foods, finding better ways to cope with stress, and maintaining adequate nutrition, may help relieve some of the symptoms associated with ulcerative colitis.2
