Research Notes on Cold Therapy
Cold therapy, also known as cryotherapy, is the method of applying ice to an injured area.1 Ice therapy is used to reduce swelling, pain, and decrease muscle spasms.2 This method decreases the ability of nerve endings to generate impulses that cause pain and inflammation.1 Ice application methods include ice packs, bag of frozen vegetables, ice massage, or a bag of ice.3
Fast Facts:
- The four stages of ice therapy are cold, burning and/or pricking, aching, and numbness.4
- Discontinue cold therapy once skin feels numb.1
- Cold therapy is recommended right after an injury occurs and continued for 48 hours at 15 to 20 minute intervals.2
- Ice therapy is not recommended for individuals diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, Raynaud's syndrome, paralysis, or with areas of impaired sensation.4
