Research Notes on Cold Sore Causes
Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. There are two types of this virus. Usually type 1 is responsible for causing cold sores. Both types can cause facial sores. Typically, the virus is transmitted through skin to skin contact.1

- More than 95% of all cold sores are caused by herpes simplex type 1.2
- Most people who have the herpes type 1 virus became infected before the age of 10.2
- Once infected the virus lies dormant until something triggers a recurrence.1
