Research Notes on Cold Medicines
Cold medicines practically fly off store shelves during certain times of year. Colds are caused by viruses, and antibiotics are useless against a virus, so do not go to your doctor demanding an antibiotic.1 Amazingly, it is chicken soup, plenty of water, and over the counter medications to treat your symptoms that will do you the most good.2
Fast Facts:
- Decongestants can help with a stopped up nose, often these are kept behind the pharmacy counter because they contain pseudoephedrine, but you do not need a prescription to buy them.3
- For fevers and headaches, acetaminophen may be your best bet.4
- Chicken soup is an excellent remedy because it acts by making it harder for neutrophils to prevent inflammation, and speeds the movement of mucus through the nose.2
