A cold knife cone biopsy aids in identifying the cause of abnormal tissue discovered during a pap smear.1 Doctors may also use this procedure as a way to treat the abnormal tissue. This biopsy involves either a surgical scalpel, laser, or loop electrosurgical excision.2 The most common use of the cold knife cone biopsy is to diagnose cervical cancer and to determine how far the disease has progressed.1
